GTA ABORIGINAL HOUSING AGREEMENT
Nancy Martin, President of MBDC and Jim Watson, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing signing the Memorandum of Understanding on November 26, 2008. Behind them are, Ontario Regional Chief Angus Toulouse, Shylo Summers, President of Toronto Council Fire, John March, President of Nishnawbe Homes, George Smitherman, Deputy Premier, Minister of Energy and Infrastructure and MPP for Toronto Centre, and Brad Duguid, Minister of Aboriginal Affairs.
The GTA Aboriginal Housing Program began when Miziwe Biik, in partnership with other Aboriginal groups, undertook an extensive consultation process in the GTA to determine how best to utilize funds from a Federal Trust for off-reserve funding. The final report was submitted to the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing (MMAH) on June 2, 2008.
The report confirmed support for an Aboriginal-controlled institution that is representative of the community, open, and transparent. The report further confirmed that MBDC was an effective and efficient agency that could deliver the Off-Reserve Housing Trust Fund (AHT).
MBDC successfully launched and delivered the AHT-funded Aboriginal Downpayment Loan Program (ADLP) and the Aboriginal Rental Program (ARP), in the GTA from 2009-2011.
MBDC continues to use the findings of the GTA Aboriginal Housing Consultation in their delivery of current housing programs.
